Training

Virginia has extensive experience using and training others in a variety of outcome measures and assessments particularly for children with cerebral palsy and allied conditions.

Training courses aim to extend participants’ knowledge of currently available outcome measures, increase expertise in using these tools, and further refine goal setting skills.

She is a trainer for the Gross Motor Function Measure and accredited to rate the Assisting Hand Assessment, Quality FM and Challenge module.

Training courses can be adapted to suit your department and therapy staff, for example for novice users or courses for therapists who want to update their knowledge and confidence using tests.

Training Courses

Gross Motor Function Measure (1 day)

This course focuses on test administration, knowledge of individual items and practise scoring on video, and demonstrations of testing on children. This course is for novice users, therapists who have only used the measure a few times or who have had a long gap since using it regularly.

This includes updates on all the different versions and developments around prognosis of motor skills; GMAE scoring software and/or scoring app; using results for treatment planning; practical sessions to enhance therapist’s confidence testing the more complex items, and practice scoring items from video. This course is for therapists who have used the test >10 times but want to enhance their skills using it or have a refresher.

A course can also be arranged so participants can test children under supervision, include presentations about recent research using the GMFM or be adapted to suit specific local needs of a department.

For over 20 years Virginia has taught courses in and outside the Bobath centres about the assessment, treatment and management of children with cerebral palsy and allied neurological conditions. Having worked at a consultant level, she has expert clinical skills, and courses can include clinical reasoning, goal setting, identifying treatment priorities and treatment planning for children with different presentations and types of cerebral palsy, along with practical sessions with children
